Listen
This week turns us toward Tisha B’Av, the 9th of the month of Av. (Monday night July 31 to sundown on Tuesday, August 1. ) Tisha B’Av is a full fast day marking the destruction of the ancient Temple.
As we go toward Tisha B’Av the tradition calls to us, saying:
Shema,
Listen.
Pay attention.
Take Notice:
When we are not able to see ourselves in each other,
We diminish our capacity for compassion.
When we insist on always being right,
We diminish our capacity for relationship.
When we insist on behaviors and structures
That do not serve the highest good,
We limit the possibility of transformation.
When we don’t listen,
When we don’t pay attention,
We allow for destruction.
Shema.
Listen
To the inner stirrings of the heart.
Listen
To the cries and outrage of others.
Listen
To the calls of the earth.
Listen
To the songs and silence of the Mystery.
Listen,
So as to remember
That within all
Is the One.
Listen,
And cultivate the willingness
To turn anger, fear and hatred
Into compassion, forgiveness and love.
The world is waiting for us
To mend the brokenness.
Shabbat Shalom. Blessings to all.
