Make for Me a Holy Place

Dear Friends,

In this week’s Torah portion, the Infinite Presence calls:

Make for me a holy place

That I might dwell among you, that I might dwell within you. (Exodus 25:8)

Over the years this verse has challenged me to search out the Divine in everyone I encounter. It has encouraged me to stretch beyond my own judgments and prejudices and experience the Divine even where it is difficult.

This year I experience a different challenge in this verse.

Every day, the news leaves me more bereft. Frustration and anger follow as does increased sadness and pain.  These feelings fill my body, depleting my energy and infiltrating my actions. I watch myself become impatient, unappreciative and angry. I feel my defenses rise and my heart close.

Make for me a holy place

That I might dwell among you, that I might dwell within you

I hear –

Reach out and do not hide away.

Be with people whose values you share, gather with those who love what you love. Do not be afraid of sadness and pain. Find comfort and support among those who are also hurting.

I am here, among you

Be wise about what you let into you psychic space. Be discerning about what engages your heart and mind. Take time to care for your soul. Listen to music, walk in the woods, go to the gym, read, garden, cook, make art. Do what brings solace.

I am right here with you.

The Divine is seeking us. Let’s reach out to each other and care well for our hearts and souls. As we do may goodness and blessing go forth.

Love and Blessings,

Rabbi Yael Levy
