When the Earth Shakes

Dear Friends,
In the midst of the turmoil and uncertainty of our times, I often turn to Psalms.

In these ancient calls I hear echoes that bring comfort and strength, even as they also offer challenge. Here is my translation of Psalm 46. I hope it is helpful.
 
From the children of Korach, for endurance and vision,
A song of the hidden realms.
 
The Infinite One is our refuge and strength,
Our help in distress,
            Very present.
 
Therefore we won’t be afraid when the earth shakes,
And mountains collapse into the heart of the sea,
When waters rage and tumble,
And mountains quake in its swells. Selah.*
 
There is a river with streams that flow, bringing joy and goodness
To the cities,
To the sacred dwelling of the Most High.
 
The Infinite Presence is in the midst of the cities.
The Presence won’t be shaken.
            The Infinite helps us face each day.
 
Nations rage, Kingdoms topple,
The voice goes forth and the earth dissolves.
 
The One of Infinite possibilities is with us.
The One of our ancestors is our refuge, Selah.
 
Come and see all that unfolds,
            Desolation on earth.
 
The Infinite will cause wars to cease to the very ends of the land,
Breaking bows, splintering spears, burning chariots in fire.
 
The Infinite calls: Be still and know that I am God.
 
I am above the nations. I am above the earth.
 
And I am with you.
 
The One of Infinite possibilities is with us.
The One of our ancestors is our refuge, Selah.
 
*Selah is considered untranslatable. It might be a musical notation, calling for a break in singing or it could be an invitation for instruments to join in the song. It might be an empathic amen or an exclamation of praise. Whatever its meaning, it invites a pause, a moment for contemplation, a noticing of what is present and calling.
