And It Was Good

Dear Friends,

We continue to begin as we open the Torah and embark on a new cycle.

In the beginning we witness Elohim, the source of all, speak and create the world.

Each time Elohim creates something, Elohim calls out, ki tov—it is good.

Light, waters, earth, trees, vegetation, sun, moon, creatures of the air, water and land—ki tov—all are declared good.

Then Elohim made human beings and there was no ki tov following this creation.

We human beings—this aspect of creation that we are—have to choose to be good.

We have to make a decision and put forth effort to be the good, again and again and again and again.

To make a pledge to goodness, compassion, generosity, love and care is radical in these times when much that happens every day can so readily cause us to act from rage, desperation and despair.

It is courageous to choose goodness.

It takes strength, endurance and commitment

To return to generosity, patience, and compassion

Each day.

And this is what we humans were created to do,

To choose goodness for the sake of each other and all creation.

As we begin yet again,

May we support each other in generating goodness.

And as we do, may we notice all creation

Offering us their encouragement and support.

Much blessing,

Rabbi Yael
