Shelter from the Storm
Dear Friends,
The air was cold and a storm seemed likely, but I would not be deterred from my afternoon paddle as the first week of the New Year continued to unfold. Sure enough the rain came.
In the midst of the downpour, vigorously paddling toward shelter, I paused for a moment and saw this magnificent rainbow pictured above.
It was so beautiful, so awe inspiring, that the storm felt like nothing in comparison. And from that day, which left me soaked through and shivering, what I carry with me is the experience of gratitude and grace and the beneficence of beauty.
I pray to remember this as storms continue to rage
And anxiety and fear swell.
May I pause,
Find beauty,
Reach for gratitude
And act in ways that create connection and relationship.
In writing about this week’s Torah portion,
Dr Aviva Zorenberg teaches that Noach learned
Alert, attentive, kindness in the ark.
Needing to take care of all the animals Noach grew curious.
He grew interested in the workings of creation,
And as his awareness, interest and curiosity grew,
Sensitivity, compassion
And a deep caring for others emerged.
It was through this awakening
That all life was renewed.
In the midst of the raging storms
May we turn toward each other with
Compassion, interest and care.
As sorrows loom and devastation threatens
May we continue to be loving, generous and kind.
And may there be moments when we pause,
Lift our eyes
And experience beauty and mystery
That is so magnificent,
So astounding,
It give us the courage, strength, determination and faith
To keep rising
Every day
For healing,
For love,
For peace.
Much love to all
Rabbi Yael
