With Determination and Imagination
Dear Friends,
This week as we come toward the presidential inauguration we begin the book of Exodus, in which we read that a new king arose over Egypt—a king who did not know Joseph. (Exodus 1:8)
A new king arose who did not know empathy, understanding or compassion. A new king arose who demonized others and ruled through oppression and fear.
The book of Exodus also tells us that as this king took power there arose strong, courageous women who would not be frightened into submission.
The midwives, Shifra and Puah were instructed by Pharaoh to kill all the male children born to Hebrew women. With daring strength they defied this horrific decree and made sure all the children lived.
Yocheved, at great risk, chose to bring new life into the world, and Moshe was born.
Miriam, undaunted by oppressive laws, stood on the shores of the river and made sure that her brother would be safe.
Pharaoh’s daughter refused to let hatred or fear determine who she would be. She saved the life of a young Hebrew boy and raised him to adulthood.
In our time,
A new leader has arisen.
And with the strength of all those who came before,
And with a promise to all those who will come after,
We will rise as well.
We will be courageous and resilient.
We will choose love.
We will stand with dignity and grace.
And with determination and imagination
We will act for the well being of all life.
With love and blessing,
Rabbi Yael
